Issara Welcomes Anders Lisborg as new Director for Business and Human Rights

Issara Institute is excited to announce the appointment of Anders Lisborg as our new Director for Business and Human Rights!  Anders is an international expert on migration management, anti-trafficking, and labour exploitation, bringing over 18 years of professional experience in more than 25 countries.  He previously served as Senior Advisor in the Danish Government Coordination Centre to Combat Human Trafficking, and has also served in the Danish Police special task force to combat organized crime and human trafficking.  He started his career in anti-human trafficking in the late 1990's in Southeast Asia with IOM, and went on to serve for 5 years in regional capacities with the ILO in Kathmandu and Bangkok.  We're so excited to have Anders back in the region and as a part of our leadership team!

Mapping Prevalence and Patterns of Labour Abuse in the Fishing Industry

Our prevalence study, conducted with International Justice Mission and supported by Walmart Foundation, "Not in the Same Boat: Prevalence and Patterns of Labour Abuse across Thailand's Diverse Fishing Industry," surveyed 248 Burmese and Cambodian current and former fishermen living in Thailand. While 76% had experienced debt bondage on a fishing boat at least once in the past 5 years, physical abuse was reported by less than 1 in 5, contrary to the picture of violence in the Thai commercial fishing fleet often painted in advocacy reporting. Issara is pleased to share its first annual report! Issara Institute's Annual Report covers program activities and impact from its founding in 2014 through December 2016. Throughout 2016, the Issara team impacted the lives of over 60,000 migrant workers, added four new worker voice channels, and expanded Issara’s supply chain work beyond seafood into fruits and vegetables, oriental sauces and poultry. We sincerely thank our donors and Strategic Partners for all the support provided to date!
